Nissan LEAF PLUS wins 2020 AJAC Canadian Green Car of the Year award

The Nissan LEAF PLUS electric vehicle has been named the 2020 Canadian Green Car of the Year (CGCOTY) by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). This marks the second consecutive year the Nissan LEAF has been awarded this title from AJAC.

Since its global launch in 2010, the Nissan LEAF has been one of the best-selling electric vehicles in the world. Now, entering its second decade, LEAF received a number of significant enhancements for the 2020 model year – starting with the addition of Nissan Safety Shield® 360 equipped as standard across all grade levels. Other available, advanced technologies include: ProPILOT Assist, ePedal and Intelligent Around View® Monitor.

LEAF offers two battery options, 40 kWh (LEAF) and 62 kWh (LEAF PLUS), ensuring that there’s a Nissan LEAF to meet the driving needs of a wide range of customers. Both versions of the Nissan’s revolutionary electric powertrain deliver excellent energy efficiency, robust torque and power output.

Nissan LEAF PLUS joined the lineup in 2019 with an NRCan range up to 363 kilometres¹, and the standard Nissan LEAF has a range up to 240 kilometres². This allows customers to choose which LEAF best suits their needs.

Entries for Canadian Green Car of the Year and Canadian Green Utility Vehicle of the Year must meet the standard requirements for entry into the Canadian Car of the Year awards program, and must satisfy additional criteria for fuel efficiency based on the entry’s size, powertrain and purpose. The automaker’s overall sustainability efforts are also a factor for the Canadian Green Car of the Year award.

“Reducing emissions is not just a goal we can achieve through our vehicles, we are reducing CO₂ emissions across the entire value chain at Nissan, globally,” says Steve Milette. “In 2018, we launched the Nissan Green Program 2022 midterm environmental plan, the pillars of which are Climate Change, Resource Dependency, Air Quality and Water Scarcity. We have made great progress in this regard, and appreciate that AJAC also considers this part of the company story when it comes selecting the best green vehicles.”

All entries are tested by more than 65 AJAC journalists across Canada. Evaluation takes place over months on different road surfaces and road conditions throughout the year and during AJAC’s autumn “TestFest” event.
